A green card allows its holder or a non-U.S citizen to work and live in US permanently. It’s also known as the permanent residence card. Most people that are not citizens of the United States acquire a green card to qualify for US citizenship and to allow them to work and live anywhere in the United States.

The procedure of applying for a green card is demanding and lengthy. Green card holders are individuals given the authority to work and live permanently in the United States. A proof of this status is determined through a green card by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

Before applying for a green card you should first consider if you are eligible to apply or if you are inside or outside the United States. Here is the guideline on how to apply for a Green Card.

  1. Check if you are eligible to apply

There are a variety of ways provided to apply for a green card in the U.S immigration laws. The eligibility requirements may differ; this depends on the immigrant category you are applying under.

  • Consider if you are eligible, for Form 1-485- Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status with USCIS, providing all supporting documents and fees. Many individuals who apply for green card they are required to fill two forms, a Green Card application (Form 1-485) and an immigrant petition.

 

  • Your application will be reviewed by USCIS and schedule an interview with you.
  • Once you receive your green card, it will be valid for 10 years

 

  1. Are you inside or outside the United States?

If you find out you are eligible for a green card, then you’ll need to consider which process to use, consular processing or adjustment of status. The other thing to consider is where are you? If you are in the United States you can use adjustment of status with USCIS. If you are outside the United States you can use consular processing with the United States Department of State.

The steps to apply for a green card will differ; this depends on the individual circumstances. Here is process for green card application that most applicants undergo:

  • You may be eligible to apply the file by yourself or someone must file an immigrant petition for you.
  • After the approval of the immigrant petition by the USCIS, and a visa accessible in your category, you can either file a visa application with the U.S. Department of State or a Green Card application with USCIS.
  • You’ll need a biometric appointment to provide photos, fingerprints and a signature.
  • You will attend an interview.
  • You will then receive a verdict on your application.
